Living in the material world

Living in the material world

Advertising creates false demands that make us crave brand names and material possessions.

The validity of this criticism depends on how you define "need". If we believe the basic functional benefits of products that consumers need—the transportation that a car provides, the nutrients we get from food, the shampoo we clean our hair with—ads can be just as culpable as they are charged. On the other hand, if you think you need a car that projects a great image, food that tastes great, and a shampoo that makes your hair shine and smells really nice, then advertising is just a way to convey those intangible benefits.

Advertising, critics say, forces us to buy products we don't need — or even want — but think we should. The economist John Kenneth Galbraith described advertising in his seminal book The Wealthy Society as "manipulating the public by creating artificial wants and desires". "," What is advertising? Advertising and Society 6, no. 3 (2005): 11. Accusing radio and television of manipulating the public. His point was that advertising creates new desires, encouraging consumers to spend their scarce resources on buying highly advertised products rather than basic items that satisfy real needs.

Galbraith expressed a common fear—that marketers associate their products with desirable social attributes so that people feel measured by what they buy, and feel guilty or anxious if they don't live up to it. For example, when prominent psychologist John Watson said, advertising agency J.J. joined Walter Thompson (now JWT), promoting Johnson's Baby Powder. In a 1925 speech, she explained how she increased the sale of baby powder by making mothers who did not use it "feel bad, because she was not a mother, and not really a good mother." Quoted by John Watson in Humphrey McQueen, The Essence of Capitalism (Montreal: Black Rose Books, 2003), 157.

But is advertising really effective? In fact, 40 percent to 80 percent of all new products fail. Advertising cannot magically make a product successful (at least for a long time) if it does not have some benefits. Johnson's Baby Powder wouldn't be on store shelves in more than 110 years if it didn't offer some benefits. As the former head of an ad agency noted, "The fact of the matter is that we sell good products and fail to sell poor products. In the end, consumer satisfaction, or lack thereof, is stronger than all our tools and skills. Put together. You know the story: Our dogs have perfect food except for one thing." . One - a dog wouldn't eat it. Association of National Advertisers, “The Role of Advertising in America,” http://www.ana.net/advocacy2/content/advamerica (accessed February 4, 2009). Subject: What are ads? Give individuals everything that they need or say to them what they need?

In fact, we can even argue (an argument that advertisers would certainly welcome, like high-end stores like Neiman Marcus, Prada, or Tiffany) that we should want things we can't afford. As per creator James Twitchell, not every person can purchase a $200 cashmere sweater from Saks for their child — yet we can continuously fantasy about claiming one.. He asserts that such a collective dream of life is vital to the continued vigor of culture. In the larger scheme of things, advertising is a simple inversion of an old sentiment: "People don't suddenly become materialistic. We've always wanted things." James Twitchell, Living It: Our Love Affair with Luxury (New York: Columbia University Press, 2002).

Luxury goods are not a bad thing or a waste (according to this argument) because history shows that the declining consumption of one generation becomes the necessity of the next. Former luxury items that are now used every day include buttons, window panels, rugs, doorknobs, pillows, mirrors, combs, and the umbrella.
